Dear Friends:

It has been just one year since I was sworn in to serve as your Buncombe County Commissioner. Can you believe it?!  It has been an amazing, inspirational and productive year.

FrostSwearInWe really hit the ground running:

We adopted an Energy Independence Resolution that commits our county to achieving an 80 percent reduction in our carbon footprint.

We worked with GE Aviation to secure an innovative factory in Asheville that will create as many as 500 additional jobs and maintain the 300+ jobs already here.

We worked with Black Mountain leaders to install vital infrastructure in the Town Square.

We passed domestic partner benefits for county employees.

We changed the county’s discrimination policy so no employee will ever be fired because of sexual orientation.

We are building a new intermediate school in Candlerrebuilding Asheville Middle School, building a new Isaac Dickson elementary school and opening up Discovery Academy, a new STEM high school.

FrostCapture2As a mother, grandmother and small business owner, I am inspired and full of ideas to create more living wage jobs and to continue to work with Buncombe County Schools to create more choices for students and parents.  We also need to continue pursue innovation and technology so students can immediately join a thriving job market in Buncombe County.

We will be installing a sheriff’s substation in Swannanoa.

As you can see we have ambitious goals.  But before we can begin to accomplish any of them, we need to ensure that my seat is secure.

Won’t you help me to victory once more?

I am humbled to serve you; your support means the world to me.  Please support my re-election so I can continue to work for Buncombe County.

Yours in service,

Ellen Frost

The main reason that I love working with the folks in Buncombe County is the wonderful spirit of connectivity that I feel everywhere I go. If you show you are ready to roll up your sleeves and work,  you will be rewarded tenfold . One of my strongest memories of that spirit comes from the aftermath of the devastating floods of  2004: Standing shoulder to shoulder handing out water with neighbors as well as strangers, and working with volunteers to care for dogs seized from a local puppy mill. Folks here really don’t care where you have come from or how long you have been here.  They will welcome you if they know you are here because of a love of our mountains, heritage and wonderful way of life.

ellenwithpeopleThe nasty partisanship that seems to have taken over government and politics lately serves no one. The issues we face are not about Democrats or Republicans- They are the challenges that all of us face .

I believe in the greater good in human nature. I am a realistic optimist: Building consensus around common ideas is the only way that any organization or community can move forward, but sometimes it takes work and patience to find that common ground. I think it is helpful to pause and remember that the child without enough food to eat is someone’s son,  and the senior without enough money for medicine is someone’s grandmother. Empathy helps us make better choices. However, I am fiscally conservative and favor a hand up instead of a handout whenever possible.

We need to remember how lucky we are to live in this wonderful place, and we must preserve it and our way of life for generations to come. At the end of the day, this is what I want for my daughter Liz, my granddaughter Lexi, and for your family too.
